More than just concrete: What goes into a cancer centre LINAC pour?

LINAC vault pours at new BC Cancer centres in Kamloops, Nanaimo and Surrey are laying the foundation for expanded access to radiation treatment closer to home.
When you pass by a construction site, you likely don't give much thought to what goes into a concrete pour. But at the new BC Cancer centres in Nanaimo, Kamloops and Surrey, these pours represent something far more significant.
Construction is well underway with major progress with the concrete pour for the linear accelerator (LINAC) vaults, which are specialized rooms designed to house the machines that will deliver life-saving radiation therapy to thousands of patients each year.
The Nanaimo centre will have four LINACs, Kamloops will have three LINACs and the new Surrey hospital and BC Cancer Centre will have room for six LINACs to deliver radiation treatment. The new centres in Nanaimo and Kamloops are set to open 2028 and Surrey in 2030.
