FAQs
In February 2026, construction began on the new MRI suite at Kootenay Boundary Regional Hospital (KBRH).
When complete, people in Trail will have a permanent and more accessible medical imaging department located within KBRH, including a new 1.5 Tesla (T) MRI scanner.
This new suite and equipment will replace the existing mobile MRI unit and GE Signa 1.5T scanner.
The project will also add 38 new parking stalls once complete and gravel sections of the parking lot will be paved, improving parking efficiency on site.
The project is expected to be complete and ready to receive patients in early 2028.
The MRI renovation project at KBRH will address parking concerns.
The project includes phased parking lot upgrades—grading, paving, improved drainage and security, and infrastructure to add EV stalls at a future date.
While some stalls will be temporarily reduced through the MRI expansion, we expect to add 38 new stalls once the project is complete, improving parking efficiency on site.
This will increase the total parking stalls on the KBRH lot from 336 to 374.
During construction, there will be a temporary loss of approximately 15-20 parking stalls at varying times throughout the duration of the project.
Parking lot improvements are scheduled to take place in a phased approach
Preliminary: March 2-April 21, 2026
Parking Phase 1: Summer 2026
Parking Phase 2: Summer 2027
During parking phases 1 and 2, supplemental parking will be available at the nearby high school.
Other parking impacts may occur, based on the needs of the construction team at the time.
Interior Health encourages patients to arrive at the hospital ahead of scheduled appointments or procedures, especially during peak times or request the support of friends and family in dropping off and picking up patients to avoid having to find parking.
We also encourage using public transit to and from the hospital where appropriate.
During construction, it is recommended that people consider carpooling, drop offs, and alternative modes of transportation are encouraged for staff and visitors.
During the Parking Phases 1 and 2 (summer 2026 and summer 2027), there will be the option to park in the J Lloyd Crowe Secondary school parking lot located across from the hospital on 1300 Frances Moran Rd.
