The Cariboo Memorial Hospital redevelopment project is underway and over the next three to six years, people in Williams Lake and the Cariboo-Chilcotin will benefit from this modernized and expanded hospital.

Interior Health is excited to share information about this project as it proceeds and update the community on potential impacts based on the construction schedule. The CMH redevelopment project includes an addition to the existing hospital as well as renovations to the existing facility.

Phase 1, which includes the addition, began in April 2023 and is expected to be complete in early 2027.

Cariboo Memorial Hospital Redevelopment Project

Phase 1, which includes the addition, began in April 2023 and is expected to be complete in early 2027.
Phase 2, which includes renovations to the existing hospital, is planned to begin in spring 2027 and expected to be complete in 2029.

People will have increased access to health-care services as the expanded hospital will include:

A new emergency department with 23 treatment spaces, an increase of 12; two trauma treatment bays; two specialized procedure rooms; an ambulance carport; and a separate public entrance.
A new medical/surgical inpatient unit with 36 beds, an increase of 16.
A new mental health and substance use inpatient unit with eight single-occupancy rooms.
An expanded ambulatory care and oncology unit with 16 renovated treatment spaces.
An expanded maternity and women's health unit with four single-occupancy rooms for maternity care, two nursery rooms and two women's health beds in private rooms. The maternity area will allow parents to stay in the same room with their babies until they are ready to go home.
An expanded pharmacy, providing additional space for pharmacists and pharmacy technicians.
An interfaith sacred space for traditional cultural and healing practices.
Smudging in patient rooms.
71 new parking stalls.
A new UBC Faculty of Medicine academic space.

Indigenous Artist Call for Expression of Interest Cariboo Memorial Hospital

Project Overview

Interior Health is seeking proposals from local Indigenous artists to create original artwork for the Phase 1 expansion of Cariboo Memorial Hospital. This new three-storey addition will include a pharmacy, emergency department, medical-surgical unit, and maternity services.

The expansion has been designed in collaboration with Indigenous Nation Partners, and we are committed to extending this collaboration through meaningful Indigenous artwork that reflects the cultures, histories, and identities of the local Nations. The inclusion of Indigenous art throughout the new space will help foster a welcoming, culturally safe, and inclusive environment for Indigenous patients, families, communities, and staff.

We invite local Indigenous artists to submit proposals to help create a space where Indigenous presence, knowledge, and perspectives are visibly honoured and celebrated throughout the hospital.

Proposal Submissions Deadline: September 30, 2026

Approval and Revisions: October 30, 2026

Fabrication Deadline: January 30, 2027

Installation: February 2027

Design Guidelines & Format

Format

The CMH Project Team will work with artists to ensure that art meets hospital infection control and safe installations/mounting guidelines.

Murals, photography, digital art images for wall skins, decals or alupanel.

Material arts like baskets, beadwork, drums, weavings, small sculptures.

Design Themes

The CMH Redevelopment Project seeks to imbed local Indigenous representation throughout the building that reflects cultural identity, local landscape, nature and wholistic health and wellness.

We encourage the artists’ vision and discretion while avoiding stark/sterile colours or pallets that feel institutional/cold.
