KBRH MRI Suite Expansion

A new MRI suite at Kootenay Boundary Regional Hospital (KBRH), Trail, will be permanently integrated into the hospital. Once open, this will replace the current MRI trailer. The new MRI suite will make a significant improvement to quality of care and increase accessibility to services for vulnerable patients, including those with serious conditions, disabilities, pediatric and elderly patients, and those experiencing mental-health challenges.

The new MRI supports KBRH as a Regional Oncology Centre, Level 3 Trauma Referral Centre, and Regional Stroke Centre. The project is expected to be complete and ready to receive patients in 2028.

The Kootenay Boundary Regional Hospital (KBRH) MRI Suite Expansion project kicked off earlier this month, and the construction team is now prepping for the relocation of the MRI trailer to a new location at the northwest end of the hospital.

This phase of the project requires the construction of a new concrete pad to support the MRI trailer. To complete this work safely, the construction team need to intermittently close several parking stalls in the northwest parking lot between March 2 and April 21.

Tips for Parking & Arrival at KBRH
- People are encouraged to secure a ride for drop off/pick up to scheduled appointments or procedures
- If vehicle parking is necessary, arrive at the hospital well ahead of appointments especially during peak times.
- Consider carpooling or public transit.
Reminder: Please adhere to all signage including No Parking and Fire Lane. Be mindful to not park in a way that blocks access to or egress of other vehicles, including BCEHS ambulance.

Construction begins today on the new magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) suite at Kootenay Boundary Regional Hospital (KBRH) in Trail, marking a major milestone in strengthening medical imaging and diagnostic services for people across the Kootenay Boundary region.
“By expanding MRI services at KBRH, we are reducing barriers to diagnostic imaging and helping patients and families receive the care they need—close to home,” said Sylvia Weir, president and CEO, Interior Health. “A modern MRI suite inside the hospital will help our teams provide faster, more connected care for patients and families for many years to come.”
The new MRI suite will replace the current mobile MRI and be located in an integrated space within the hospital, supporting KBRH’s role as a Regional Oncology Centre, Level 3 Trauma Referral Centre, and Regional Stroke Centre. Once complete in early 2028, people in Trail will have access to a permanent, more accessible MRI suite inside the hospital, including a new 1.5T MRI scanner.
Following a competitive bidding process, Interior Health selected Ledcor Construction Ltd. for the KBRH MRI suite expansion project. Mobilization and construction are set to begin on Feb. 2, 2026. The project is expected to be complete and ready to receive patients in mid 2028.
